Sinner Me

Living beings do that which is built into their nature.  Fish swim, birds fly, kangaroos hop.  I’m a sinner, so I sin.

It’s not that being a sinner is something I especially enjoy.  In fact, it’s quite bothersome and leads to all kinds of complications and pain.  Fortunately, as years on the spiritual path go by, my transgressions become fewer and less severe overall (with a few exceptions now and then.)  Still the truth remains.  Even the Bible says it: “If any man says he is without sin, he is a liar.”

It’s good news, therefore, that sin isn’t the end of the road.  God in His love created a way out of the muck.  After sin comes confession, which simply means agreeing with God that I’ve missed the mark.  And next there’s repentance, or turning my behavior around, so that twenty years from now I’m not struggling with the same sins that plague me today … at least not as badly.  His forgiveness, which He gives freely, completes the process.  Happy day!

That I’m a sinner will not change.  Neither will God’s mercy and grace that provide an antidote to the sinful nature within me.  It’s a combination He created and is willing to live with, and so am I.

(Thanks, Susan S., for an e-mail discussion that was the genesis for these thoughts.)

Title One

(For a previous post on the topic of fathers, click here.)

A famous man once said “I’ve been called many things throughout my life.  My favorite is ‘Dad’.”  God seems to have similar feelings.

Although God holds the titles of creator, provider, healer, mighty one, and several others, the most frequently used reference, and the one by which He often describes Himself, is Father.  Scripture calls God the Father of the fatherless, eternal Father, the one Father, the Father of all, etc.  His followers are known as His children.  Those who knew Him well – David, Paul, John, and of course Jesus – constantly addressed God as “Father.”  We are even encouraged to cry out to Him as “Abba”, a term of endearment used by Hebrew children, similar to the English “Daddy.”

Sadly, not all human fathers are positive reflections of God’s character.  The Bible speaks to this, explaining how God goes far beyond even the best earthly dads in His desire to give good gifts to His children.

That God is all powerful, all knowing, and present everywhere at once is amazing.  But I’ll leave all that to Him, and enjoy the simple fact that He’s my Father.

Q & A (The Sequel)

(For a previous post also called Q & A, click here.)

Isaac’s wife, Rebekah, was pregnant with twins.  The two babies fought with each other even while they were in the womb.  Scripture tells us this: “Rebekah said, ‘Why is this happening to me?’ So she went to inquire of the Lord.”

When life presents difficult situations, there are many places to go for insights. Deep friendships are invaluable. Even
books and articles can provide help.  At the same time, I mustn’t forget that the source of all truth – including answers to my questions – is God.  In fact, that’s exactly where my brothers and sisters in the faith ultimately point me.

The Bible passage says that Isaac’s wife received a response from the Lord, and quite promptly at that.  My experience and observation indicate that it doesn’t always happen this way, but that God is sometimes silent for far longer than I’d like.  His love and consoling, expressed directly and through others, fill the gap.

When it comes to questions, I might not always get an immediate answer, but at least I know who to ask.

Friends In Deed

At a certain point in His life, Jesus told His disciples, “From now on, I’ll call you friends and let you know everything I’m doing.”  That’s pretty significant.

Over the years I’ve continually pursued friendships. What I’ve sought is someone with whom I could simply share life, knowing that there are no areas off limits and our love for one another would be intact on the other side of anything we might face together.  I suspect that most everyone wants something similar.

Jesus Himself seems to be on the same track.  He uses the word “friend” and talks of being transparent all in the same breath. He leaves the ninety-nine to care for the one, has promised He’d never forsake us, knows the number of hairs on our heads, is eager to restore the bond each time we fall short, etc.

No wonder I’m so attracted to the Son of God, and to those humans who reflect His character in our relationships.  They call me friend.  And they truly fulfill the title.
