Bumper Crop

In a well known biblical quote, Jesus said “Lift up your eyes and look on the fields. They are white for harvest.” I used to think (because it’s what I was taught) that this meant there were people just lining up to change their religious beliefs. It never seemed to work out that way, however, and now I know why. It’s because the Son of God was saying something quite different.

The true meaning of these words is actually right there in the context of the scripture. Immediately prior, Jesus said “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and accomplish His work.”

I encounter dozens of men and women each day who need everything from a smile to a sandwich. I don’t have to start an international organization in order to lend a hand. Instead, a few dollars or a listening ear can revolutionize someone’s life.

Those in need of love, understanding, kindness, encouragement, and even the smallest amounts of practical help are literally all around me. Finding an opportunity to do God’s will and accomplish His work is as easy as picking a piece of produce from a field that’s white for harvest. All I have to do is lift up my eyes.

That is so well said. Thank you for saying it too.

I have often said I might be the one who says that one thing that may offer hope and change a person’s outlook, or bring them closer or back to God. They may have heard what I have to say many times, but I may be the vessel at that moment that God uses to reach out to someone. We are standing in the fields every day and the crop is ready, every day. I hope I never lose site of that.
