No Greater Love

It’s Memorial Day weekend in America. A time celebrated in many ways. But those for whom this holiday was established are not attending any Earthly get-togethers. They’re the fallen soldiers, sailors, airmen, etc. whose lives ended in service to our country.

There are various reasons that a person would face the danger of being in the military. Perhaps excitement and adventure, promotion of an ideology, or even compulsion against his or her will. But far and away, the over-riding answer from the people themselves is that no matter what gets them there, they willingly risk it all for their buddies on the battlefield and their families at home.

The Bible tells us more about these heroes. Jesus said “Greater love has no man than this – that he lay down his life for his friends.”

God, who is love, is today surrounded by a huge throng who share his character, and proved it only too completely. The heavenly barbecue will be well attended.

May we all remember.

I love the imagery of this heavenly barbecue, and the message that goes with it: What we do for ourselves dies with us, but what we do for others echoes throughout the ages.
