What, No Steeple?

The book of Revelation in the bible contains, among many other things, a small glimpse of what heaven might be like. One of the related passages says, “I did not see a sanctuary there, because the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its sanctuary.”

What? No sanctuary in heaven? No place to go to get my spiritual on? How can that be? (Please forgive the sarcasm.) Why, I’ve been told since I was a small child that I should attend meetings in the sanctuary at least once a week.

Apparently, there’s an alternate truth. Where God and Jesus are, there doesn’t need to be a formal house of worship. He resides within his people, who are interestingly called his body in scripture. He occupies the praises of his followers. He shows up whenever and wherever just two or three come together around him. Can that happen in a designated building? Yes, but it certainly doesn’t have to.

Imagine a place with complete access to God, total communion between spiritual brothers and sisters, and no sanctuaries. Just speaking personally – that sounds like heaven to me.
